U. S. Steel and USA Luge Project

Since the middle of 2004, U. S. Steel has been working with the USA Luge Association and top American Luge athletes in trying to make their sleds faster. Teams from our Automotive Center and our Research and Technology Center have worked together in creating an alloy to be used for the blades on the sleds. This alloy is designed to reduce natural wearing resulting from contact with the ice, which might slow the sled critical fractions of a second. New steel runners were designed, optimized and manufactured at the Automotive Center. With help of the local industry in the Detroit area we were able to supply the USA Olympians with the unique equipment before the Winter Olympic Games 2006 in Torino, Italy.

Check out the video link below to take a ride on a luge run and be sure to watch the USA Luge team go for the gold in the Winter Olympics.
