United
States Steel joins USA Luge's Supplier Family
The
USA Olympic Team has selected U. S. Steel as its official supplier and designer for the National teams sled runners, a critical component to remain competitive in the upcoming World Championships in Salt Lake City and the 2006 Winter Games in
Torino, Italy. The U. S. Steel Advanced Applications Group, along with U. S. Steel Research has joined forces with
USA coaches and athletes to first understand the needs that make a steel runner “fast,” accomplished through data collection trips to the Olympic Training Facility in Lake Placid in addition to forensic research on numerous blade designs undertaken at the U. S. Steel laboratories. From this, three potential U. S. Steel blade designs are now under development and will be made into prototypes to be tested at the tracks this fall by the Olympic athletes. These prospective designs encompass not only proprietary advanced steel grades, but exploration of new design
practices to reduce the friction between the blade and ice. Watch both this February at the Salt Lake City
Luge and Bobsled World Championships, as well as the 2006 Olympic games for U. S. Steel’s runners helping the
USA teams go for the gold. Visit
